On my main sail head board it has two holes for the main halyard one close to the mast and one an inch or so outside of that one can someone tell me which hole to use for the halyard? And when would you use the other hole? Thanks for your help.

Not just 30 foot Catalinas

On a 30 foot Siedlemann (?) that I crew on, we have the same two holes on the head board. Unless someone knows the precise use for these, I have figured they are for either with slugs or slides on the mast, the hole closer to the mast, and for bolt rope into the mast, the hole further from the mast. Other than that I haven't a clue, or clew as one might say in sailing circles. But maybe somebody else does.

My Understanding

As I understand it, they offer another dimension of sail shape adjustment. Use the one closest to luff (closest to the mast) and more tension is placed on the luff, use the one closest to the leech (the trailing edge of the main) and more tension is placed on the leech. Don't ask me which is best for what conditions. If I were to guess, I'd say more leech tension = flatter sail = stronger winds. Less leech tension = fuller sail = lighter winds. What I'm not clear on is how this works in combination with other sail trim controls such as cunningham, vang, etc. I'm sure that there is a racer out there who can explain it with more accuracy.

Thanks

Thanks Bob what you said makes a lot of sence. I am sure your are right on with your explanation. At least it sounds good to me.
