I would like to run the main sail halyrad back to the cockpit but the sail batons are catching on the lazy jacks when I'm pulling up the sail. The only supporting the boom is the lazy jacks. What do I need to do to eliminate this problem?

You should try aiming your boat straight upwind as you are setting your main.And also try to slightly tighten a mainsheet while you are doing that, so the jack lines are a bit tight. It might prevent you from hoisting a main all the way up, but once the battens pass the jack - release mainsheet to hoist it all the way and trim. I don't have a lazy jack, so I'm just guessing here...

You need a topping lift to support the boom and then modify your lazyjacks so that you can tighten or ease them as required. My lift is a fixed length attached to the top of the mast, just long enough to raise the boom some. I have to disconnect it at the boom when the mainsail is up and attach it to the backstay. If the lift was lead back to the cockpit from the mast top I wouldn't have to fuss with connecting and disconnecting. Whatever is your preference. The main thing is; you will not be able to slacken your lazy jacks unless you support the boom some other way. Hope this helps.
