Main sail and reef points

I'm ordering a new mainsail this winter and am wondering about the
position of the reef points. I'm thinking of going with the first
reef at 12.5% and the second a bit deeper at 35%. I'm also wondering
about sailcloth weight-I had quotes from 5.9 oz to 6.6 oz. Since I
hope to do some cruising in the not too distant future I elected to
go with a 6.4 oz cloth thinking this would be a good compromise
between light air shape and durability. Another thing that was
perplexing was the different square footage of the various sailmakers
sails-everything from 155-167 ft square. is this a consequence of the
amount of raoch added to the sail?

At the moment I'm leaning toward Doyle as a sailmaker - the price is
reasonable and they are willing to have someone come out and look
over the mesurements and the boat. I like the idea of dealing with a
local sailmaker if I can.

Excuse my ignorance, but 6,60 oz is that per square
foot? I ask because I fix my sails with 10 oz per
square yard, and dont think is that much thicker than
the main sail I have which is probably very degraded
already.

During the Solent regatta I saw a brand new main sail
(top of the range, 3 reefs, full lenght battons, etc
etc etc) and the weight was more than the 10 oz.

Also for future reference, how much are they quoting
you?

Thanks

Hi Rodger,

Not being a sailmaker I don't really know, but I think the cloth
weight is per square yard. The quote from Doyle was $1170.00 for a
166 square ft, 6.4 oz, two reef points and four full battens.

Hi Tom,

Just curious, but have you considered FX Sails?

Sails, Sailboat Sails, Custom Sails, Instant Online Sail Prices at FX Sails

I received a quote from them over the winter, and their quote for a loose footed main (can't remember the material thickness) was well below $1K. I believe it was a little more than $700 and change with an incentive to order early for spring. I think it is a 6 week turn around, and I have heard lots of good things about their product.

When you call or email (they have a price quote calculator on the website), you speak directly with the owner of the company (I believe his name is Bill?). He is a great guy, very accommodating and knowledgeable.

Might be worth a check before you make your final decision, and I also believe that they come with two reef points standard, though don't quote me on that! (smile)

Can't go wrong with Doyle though. I had a Doyle main on my Sabre and it was a great sail.

Hi
Anybody interested I have the sail plan for all sails on a
Vega.
By the way, the main sail is 14.8 square meter or 159
square foot. The original main has 4 battens, but no full
battens.

Wilhelm

Is it possible to email the sail plans as I am about to order new sails in the UK and need a guide to get quotations and a good set of sails.
