I'm ordering a new mainsail this winter and am wondering about the
position of the reef points. I'm thinking of going with the first
reef at 12.5% and the second a bit deeper at 35%. I'm also wondering
about sailcloth weight-I had quotes from 5.9 oz to 6.6 oz. Since I
hope to do some cruising in the not too distant future I elected to
go with a 6.4 oz cloth thinking this would be a good compromise
between light air shape and durability. Another thing that was
perplexing was the different square footage of the various sailmakers
sails-everything from 155-167 ft square. is this a consequence of the
amount of raoch added to the sail?
At the moment I'm leaning toward Doyle as a sailmaker - the price is
reasonable and they are willing to have someone come out and look
over the mesurements and the boat. I like the idea of dealing with a
local sailmaker if I can.
