Has anyone run there main halyard to the cockpit on a Catalina 30 I would like to make it easier for my wife so she does not have to climb on deck in rough seas . We can't do a cabin top as we have a dodger. Pics would be appreciated
Is it a two speed winch? If so, then you never have to go all the way around. If not, you can only deal with it by either cranking with the handle and replacing it, or getting a new winch. My cabin top winch is on the starboard side and to close to the dodger to be able to turn a winch handle , maybe I can move the winch back far enough to do some good
Winch Handle Length: excerpted from WM advisor--------I bolted my dodger to the cabintop before I even thought about the winch handle. A 12-inch hadle hit the dodger frame. A 10-inch does not. Maybe there is an 8-inch handle made?
In general, handles are 10" long, a good size for human physiology as well as the cockpits of sailboats. However, your arms will describe a pretty large circle, and many sailors find they are much faster with an 8" double grip lock–in handle, especially when tacking in light airs.
8–inch: Fast, but low powered. Good with limited clearance.
10–inch: Slower than 8", but 25% more powerful.
We have double line reefing, do it from the cockpit. You still have to go forward to reef the main. The best solution is to reef early.
