I have a Hunter 33.5 (1989) with a z-spar fractional mast and need to replace the main halyard sheaves. Does anyone know how these are installed? There is no apparent access to the axle pin without removing the whole masthead fitting. From the drawing on the z-spar website, it looks like they might drop in from the top. Has anyone had experience with replacing these sheaves?

You do not need to remove the mast head, just remove the mast head cap (see the attached PDF file). It is held in place by two 17mm nuts on the “J” bolts. A ratchet with a short extension and socket is required as the nuts are in a recess in the cap and there is no room to use a wrench. Once the nuts are removed you can lift and rotate the cap to access the front or rear sheaves. Hopefully you will have enough slack in any wiring. The sheaves mount on axles that simply drop into slots in the mast head. You will also have to pull each halyard up and out of the masthead and tie it off before you can remove the axle and sheaves.
I opted for new metal sheaves from Rig-rite vs the standard plastic ones.
