Main Halyard Sheave Replacement

There is a double sheave on the deck through which the main sheet and main halyard pass. The sheave dedicated to the halyard is crached and needs to be replaced. I removed the screw on this sheave but the axle on this sheave is fastened to the bracket which holds both sheaves and the bracked is fastened to the deck and cannot easily be removed. Any advice how to replace this sheave?

I have removed them

When you remove the bolt that holds the shaft to the mast base, tap the end with a small hammer, to loosen any corrosion, then use vise grips on the head of the shaft, and try and turn the shaft with an up and down motion. This should free things so as you can remove it.

Sheave Replacement

Thanks for the reply and the helpful suggestion. The bracket I am referring to holds two sheaves, one for the main halyard and the other for the main sheet. This bracket is on the deck. Each of the sheaves has a screw through the center of the sheave. I remnoved the screw but the sheave seems to be bound by a center hollow post through which the screw fits. It seems the center post is part of the bracket and the bracket is fastened permanently to the deck. If I could remove the sheave, I would replace it with one of the sheaves on the starboard side, an identical bracket which regulates the boom vang lines, lines which I do not use. I am about to sell this problem to a boat yard to fix but wanted first to attempt the repair myself with help from this Hunter web site. Sorry I did not give adequate description in the first posting as to the location of the problem.

Dont think you can take out the sheave

because it is held in by a compression rivet. I think you have the Rutgerson brand - it was standard OEM hardware on my H34. I would much rather replace the whole block rather than get the yard fees to take out a sheave. Good luck.

Line Organizer

Your description sounds like a double sheave line organizer on the deck either side of the mast in front of the spray hood. The whole part probably needs to be removed and replaced. Unscrewing both screws should allow you to work it loose fron any sealant beding that may have been used.

That bracket too

can be removed, it is held to the deck with 5200 or similar bedding, I had the unit off just recently. (Mine are Schaffer.)
