Main halyard rigging to Cockpit on O'Day 222

Does anyone have an experience or advise about rigging a main halyard aft to the cockpit of a 1986 222? The winch on my zspar mast is shot, and rather than spend the cash to repair or replace it, I was wondering if the $ would be better spent buying and installing hardware to rig the line aft and utilize the jib winches. The lines on boat are a bit "curvey", so I am not sure about the best fittings to use and their placement. Naturally, the thought of putting more holes in the boat is a bit intimidating - any experiences, photo's, drawings or advise ?Jim

Jim -Its more common to remove the mast winch and mount it on deck to service the main halyard but what you propse could probably be done. (I use my genoa winches to haul the anchor line - anything is possible with enough ingenuity and a few blocks)My concern is this. You need a stopped of some sort to control the main halyard. If you mount it somewhere other than the coach roof next to the companionway you will have a bar tight line running across some surface you need to walk across or sit on. If you mount the stopper in the usual place you'll have a foul lead from the stopper to the winch. I'd try this - with a line but without mounting anything. If the line came aft from the winch to a stopper mounted to port next to the companionway hatch, you might get a fair enough lead to the starboard winch (or vice versa).Justin - O'day Owners' Web
