Its time to replace the main sail halyard on our '87 Hunter31. Can someone please supply the correct line diameter, length and any replacement tips you might like to share. Thanks

7/16

Dave: All the halyards should be 7/16". I used Sta-set and I think I went with 110' (probably a little long). I think that you should be able to calculate it based on the mast dimension (41.5' tall). I went with Sta-setx 1/2" on the main, and wished I would not have done this. The Sta-setx is a little hard on the hands. It has slightly lower stretch. Performance Yacht www.Pyacht.com is a good place for halyards. Also you want eyes spliced in for shackles. Tying knots weakens the line by a very large percentage of the ropes strength. You can find an easy way to change the halyards that we used in the photo forum. We used a large paper clip and a little riggin tape. Quick, easy and safe method.

Go fish

Using sturdy fishing line, sew one end to the other in a crisscross manner so that it will remain flexible yet strong as it goes over the upper sheeve. Do not use duct tape, etc. for it will jam at the sheeve.
