Main Halyard Problem

I was hoisting an external antenna on my main halyard when it came crashing to deck. The pin to the shackle came out and the halyard ended up at the top of the mast. Now the problem is how do I retrieve the halyard. THe boat is a H37.5 7/8 rig so use of the headsail halyard will not allow me to reach the top of the mast.Any ideas?

May have to use a bosun chair to go up the mast. It's good practice for an emergency. Guy in the next slip may have one, and he can help with the hoist. Be sure to get a second person to hold the line behind the cranking by the first.

A few options;

1) Take it to a marina that has a crane to take someone up. 2) Get next to a bridge of adequate height while somebody on top ties a weight. 3) Get as high as you can with the headsail halyard and reach over with a pole that has an attached a three prong fishing hook at the end. 4) Take the mast down but since you may need a crane to do that, see #1. 5) Take it to the Bahamas where one of them dock boys will free climb the mast. 6) My best solution would be to pay a rigger and let him do it. Have him install a spare halyard to get your money's worth or perhaps an omnidirectional TV antenna. Good luck. Oh, I been there.

I kept my topping lift for just this occasion. Use it to pull thru a 1/2" line for the Bosun's chair. I once had a yard hoist a man in a bosun's chair on their crane and he did the job. costabundle! You might try this too.
