Main Halyard Cheek Pulley

I'm trying to rig my new mast for the 1983 MacGregor 22 I just bought... but the previous owner had it rigged wrong... and the instruction sheet I have doesn't show where the block (pulley) for the main halyard goes on the masthead... it's apparently called a 'cheek pulley'... which I think I've identified... but I can't figure out where it should be mounted on the masthead to stop the mainsail at the top when hoisted. The other problem is the jib halyard ring block... which the previous owner mounted to the side of the mast with two bolts... it doesn't have a ring on top of the block... if I get a replacement block... should it be mounted next to the forestay attachment... allowing it to hang and swing freely? Any help would be much appreciated... Thanks, John Blake

Starboard side, top, next to the slot... The main will stop when the Luff (leading edge) of the sail is tight.... Found cheek blocks on a catamaran site....

Thanks!

Timo42: Thanks so much for the photo... it has been a great help getting the new mast together... There are a few other problems with my 22 that I was wondering if you could help me with? [1] Swing keel ratchets-up nicely, but the friction clutch as I crank it counter-clockwise to lower it doesn't want to work... the handle just screws off and I have to manually go underneath where the winch is and hold a screwdriver to the gears and lower it slowly... obviously a pain in the ass... [2] Do you have a picture of your mainsheet setup... the guys before me had it wrong... I think I've got it right... but, I'm not sure... the blocks on it seem odd... and if you follow the MacGregor instructions... the final run to the cleat is along the stern... not from the boom as I think it should be... so it comes around the spring block properly just before the cleat... [3] The rudder I have doesn't look like the original... it has a pulley at the bottom for raising it to a 45-degree angle when going to shore or putting it on the trailer... which makes some sense... is this a kick-up rudder in case I hit bottom? Or, is the pulley something all 22's have? Right now I run the line from a knot in a hole on the rudder---up through the middle of the cleat on the transom---then back down to the pulley---and up again to the cleat to tie it off... sound like anything you've seen? The problem is, when you pull up on the line to fold the rudder... it pulls against the entire rudder mount and wants to jump the pintles (if there's no cotter pin in the top one)... [4] I was told by a MacGregor dealer that the mainsail, boom, and gooseneck have a built-in reefing system that has the mainsail wrapping around the boom... but the gooseneck I have won't spin... I would have to remove the boom from the mast and wrap the main manually around the boom. Is there a part I need? Thanks for any help... the MacGregor is way different than my other boats... no downhaul, no traveller and the triangle mainsheet rig is all new to me... swing keel problems I'm familiar with... Feel free to call if you have any questions... John Blake (916)599-3805

1. I would get a new winch, yours is probably almost as rusted as mine was, it gets really dangerous when the brake fails. I found mine at northern tool. 2. Can't help you there, I changed mine to a traveller, big improvement, the original system is marginal at best. 3. Mine had the original solid rudder, changed to an idasailor unifoil, sounds like you have their earlier rudder, check with them for rigging. And you always need to put the cotter pins in... They get real hard to steer if the rudder falls off. *yks 4.Its probably corroded, there is a spring, you push the boom towards the mast I think, look at boom hardware on the dwyer mast site for a pic of the mechanism. but imho its not worth the effort, I can't use it anyway my new main sheet attaches to the middle of the boom. I am putting reef points in my main to do it right, found a kit from sailrite, going to learn how to sew this week and install it. Tim
