main halyard chafe

I've been really happy with my '89 Vision 32 for the 2+ seasons I have sailed her, but I wonder if there is a solution to what seems to my inexperienced eye rather brief halyard life. I replaced the main halyard right after I bought the boat and also put on a spare; I just switched to using the spare last weekend. Our sailing season in the 1000 Islands is rather short, so it's not like I'm hoisting sail hundreds of times a year, either. I would search the archive (if there is one) to see if this question has been raised before, but being a newcomer to this site--and in a hurry before leaving on vacation--I would appreciate anyone's quick insight on the problem.

Jon, we are on 10 years on our V32 'Attitude Adjustment'. The external cover chafes fast, but does not deteriorate beyond that quickly. I suggest swapping the cam on the stopper with the reef in case it is worn and be sure you are not using excessive halyard tension. (Easy to do in low gear.) Good Luck. RD
