Main Halyard at the top of Mast!

Help! My Main Halyard is at the top of the mast! Got a hard blow and the shackle came undone and dropped the main. Any ideas? Stepping the mast at the dock is an option, but not a favorite, and I am not going up. Some type of long pole with a hook? Ideas appreciated.

Hey, Been there done that ! Does your yard have a crane ? Mine did, I sent a guy up in a Bosuns Chair on my Hunter 340 and just pulled it down. Was much quicker than stepping the mast. Since then I've always had a second way to get to the top of the mast. Good Luck

Make a pole

I see that you have a 20' boat. When I had to retrieve a loose line/halyard, I went to the hardware store and bought 8' sections of PVC tubing. I also bought the connectors to join then to make the length that I needed. Then just fashion a hook and tape it to the end of the PVC to retrieve the halyard. It will have some flex, but you will eventually be able to get ahold of the shackle. Then it's your option to return the PVC to the store or not.
