My wife and I have just purchased a Hunter 33' and know that the roller furling main needs to be greased, it's been unused for over a year and seems a bit sticky. Any suggestions? I've been told that the two rubber covers can be removed to do this but would love to have some details as to the proper/easy way to do this maintenance. Thanks - Ken

I recently purchased a Hunter 386 with an in-mast furler and lubricated it today. ITodat removed the plastic plugs and greased the bearing and gears and sprayed LPS part no. 00216 (telephone 800-241-8334). You (or your rigger) will need to clim the mast to grease the halyard swivel. If you email me at sjpenny5@gmail.com I can e-mail you the Selden manual.

You can also drop the main to grease the halyard swivel. The main halyard and the Head of the main attach to the swivel and all come down when you drop the main.
There is also a bearing for the roller at the top which it looks like you have to drop the mast to do, as suggested in the manual pg 12.

You can grease the mast top bearing without dropping the mast by climbing to the the top of the mast. Did this yesterday.
That's good to know as well. I was going by the manual that reccomends removing the Masthead bearing, cleaning out all the grease and re-greasing. Periodic greasing only may or may not be sufficient?
You originally said the halyard swivel which is attached to the main and main halyard, hence my response. With a fractional rig on the newer H33's, you'd have to drop the main to get to the top of the mast, I doubt the spinnaker halyard would reach as it is fed just above the jib halyard.

If the reefing system should begin to be stiff after several years usage it can be necessary to dismantle its components for servicing. Clean the gears and ball-bearings from old grease and relubricate.
Most Hunters have a spare halyard that is used also as a topping lift that can be used to climb the mast without dropping the furling main.
Yes, but then you wouldn't have a back-up safety line. It only takes a few minutes to drop the main.
