I would offer them $15-20k less than they are asking for the replacements of the mast (less any other survey issues). This is probably what it will cost to replace. If they accept the offer, you can either replace it or live with it.

You will probably be looking at the same hit if/when you decide to sell it.

Where is the boat located? Was this done at the factory? Some Hunters have been modified at the factory for ICW bridge clearance of 48' along the gulf coast. There are a couple bridges marked 50' on charts that are known to be 48' under most tidal conditions. I looked at a 35.5 in Pensacola years ago that had its mast shortened and in hindsite wish I had bought it. Most all Hunters are "over-canvased" on purpose, because most of them are used primarily in 20 kts or less, which is why most all of them need reefing at 15-18kts to sail flat. If its a late model boat, factory modified, I wouldn't shy away from it all other factors being equal.

What Honeyman Said

When ther was a Hunter dealer here in town the offered a "Gulf Coast Model" with a shoal keel and a shorter mast on a couple of different boats.

If it was done profesionaly I would not worry about it if it was done by a guy in a garage with a rip saw which I can't imagine with in mast furling it is a different story.

Erdal,
I'm pretty sure I know the history of this boat. If it's the one I'm thinking of it was ordered from the factory with a shortened rig. It was a special order with both Hunter and Selden involved. Feel free to call me. 410-269-1343
