I have a Magellan 3000xl GPS with the cigareete/power data module. Two wire are to connect to the cigarette plug and there is two wire to connect to a connector to send or receive data from the computer. Does anyone know what kind of connector is to be made to these wires, Prephaps a telephone plug so it could plug into the modem? Thanks in advance for any help Bill C. S?V Wind Dancer

GPS connections

The connection to the PC is through a serial port (COM1, COM2). This is usually with a nine pin connector (DB9). You can probably get one from Radio Shack or an electronics store. It's the same kind of connector your mouse might use unless it's one of the new round mini-din connectors. You'll want to be sure you connect the two wires to the correct pins for send/recieve data though.

Connections

Bill If you are going to connect it to a computer you have several different ways you can do it. This is what I did because I wanted to have the option to move it to other boats if I wanted to. I made an adapter. I have two different ones, one for my 3000XL and one for a 410. The difference is in the connector to the GPS. The first one, uses a 5 pin connector, the other one uses a RJ-45. The power is just any small power jack. I picked the size of mine to go alone with an AC to 12V adapter that I all ready had. This makes it convenient working at home. You do not need a 12V battery sitting there. The connector between the box and the computer is a RJ-11. It's a 4 wire telephone jack( note some cables may have RJ-11's at both ends but only 2 wires, will not work). At the computer I used an easy to find RJ-11 to DB9 adapter. The advantage to the RJ-45 is that it is easy to get cables for it if you want or need to have an extension. It's nice if you want your GPS top side and leave the computer down below. The problem with the RJ-45 you would need the crimping tool to install the end on the cable to the GPS. The one with the RJ-45 was convenient to make. At Fay's I found a wall outlet that had a RJ-45 and a 6 pin outlet( I do not know what the RJ for the 6 pin is) I use the RJ-45 to go to the GPS and the 6 pin to go to the computer. Yes the 4 wire cable will just fine in the 6 wire slot. It's wired such that you can not hurt your computer or GPS and plug one cable in wrong. If you want a complete wiring diagram email me at bpetersen@pyramid.net. For wires from the GPS Red is the + side of your battery Blackis the - side of your battery and it must go to DB9 pin 5 Orange DB9 pin 2 RedDB9 pin 3 Good luck Bob Zippidee DU
