I got a free Sail when I went to the Miami boat show and it just keeps coming for some reason. I will not renew. I gave up on sailing mags when one of them ran a feature article about the horror of getting your 42 inch flat screen to retract into the settee. I think they should have called the coast guard for assistance.

We’re still getting Cruising World courtesy of free Annapolis Boat Show subscription ad-ons. We get BoatUS with our membership for tow service. In years past we got Sail, Practical Sailor, Sailing World, Good Old Boat and Lats & Atts. I had bookcases full of magazines and never could find info when I needed it. The internet is just easier and offers so much more. We stopped subscribing to everything except L&A and CW. I’m about over Capt. Fatty and rarely read his stuff anymore. We always liked L&A and will check out Cruising Outpost.

Practical Sailor I'll keep. When subscriptions run out Cruising World, and Sail will be discontinued they just seem to be getting further away from those in less that 50' S/V.

as i am currently living the full time cruiser lifestyle, i do not subscribe to any of the magazines--i find nothing useful to learn in them--they are mainly advertisements to keep selves alive with the only positivity being one specific member's pictures.....
there is no room on a boat for magazines....

Sail and Practical Sailor and I borrow others.

I don't think I've ever read a magazine where I didn't glean an idea or learn from a mistake, if only confirmation of what I already surmised. Certainly I have more titles than the county library system! Either lots of folks are a lot smarter than me, or perhaps I am always hungry for ideas for something to improve or to examine. For me sailing is largly for the puzzling, at least in the winter.

I'm with Stu (as usual...) on this: used to get just all the slick boating pubs and saved all the ones with articles I thought of use. Now I get none. Had a pile of old mags in the basement and my wife asked me one day why I saved them. When I told her they had useful articles, she said let me introduce you to the Internet. Bingo. Just back from the recycle bin where I dumped them all.

This thread had me do the same thing. I had all the issues of Atts and Latts from #1 on. They are now waiting for the trash man.

Latts and Atts was always poorly editied fluff, fun once in a while.

But I'll be darned if I don't have old mags with a few things you can't find on the net. Sail did some side-by-side drogue testing that's hard to find. Multihulls used to have home-build stuff that would be impossible to find even on today's net.

But I ruthlessly thin my keepers every few years. Did a big haul a few months ago.

"Messing About in Boats" articles are submitted by readers. A very low key magazine, black and white and 3rd class delivery to save on cost. Has been described as being on the dirt road of the Information Highway.

For me Professional Boatbuilder, Practical Sailor and I also get the ABYC Reference Point quarterly magazine..

Occasionally I pick up Good Old Boat. They keep sending me Sail, don't know why, but it is a thin thread of what was once a decent sweater.

Yeah, I lied. I got the ProBoat too, just hit the mail today, I forgot about that.

I used to like Sail, but like everybody else said.....

And a small edit while that reminded me. Years ago I had a sub from Sail, and they kept sending me the rag for a couple of YEARS after I stopped renewing. Go figure.

That looks like a mag I'd pay for. The glossy monthly advert rags used to interest me until they got to the point that it was more work to find the actual writing than that writing was worth.

I used to subscribe to GOB but let it lapse. It gets a bit stale but in general has a lot of good stuff. I'd like to see more reviews on more common boats in there, rather than reviews of boats that had a production run of 45 in Canada only.
Right now I have a Sail subscription, it was one of those things where I got like two years for $6 or something ridiculous. But honestly, Sail gives me rage. I mean, they called a picnic boat the "best cruising boat under 30"!?! Seriously, it doesn't even have standing headroom!! NOT a cruising boat. And while I appreciate the beauty of a $3.5 million dollar Oyster, that's sure as hell not representative of what real people sail in the real world.
