Nice looking boat. Probably a bit out of my price range. That was really well set up. It is a shame that they still aren't making them.

I'm a bit late to the conversation, but you might want to take a look at a Cal-24. Classic Lapworth keelboat design, fast, capable (one even circumnavigated...look for info on Robin Lee Graham and Dove) and there are a fair amount of them out there that have been properly maintained and are in your price range when available. They have a plywood deck core, so any signs of a significant lack of maintenance rules out many. We had a Cal 27-T/2 which sailed siglehanded like a big fast racing dinghy and I even knew an owner that trailed his C-27 all over the Midwest, but I wouldn't recomend that.
There is a First 235 in Georgia that looks like it just needs some TLC inside and out for $2900 w/o trailer or motor though. Just do a search on Boat Trader. Also one on Ebay right now with trailer and motor with a $5k buy it now. Looks to be in good shape.

There are many small older capable boats in your price range. To name a few, cal 24 or 25 C&C 24 or 25 Ericson 25 pearson 26 catalina 25 I have a pearson 26 that I trailer. Please bar in mind that you will need some funds from your budget for equipment and maintence

Might as well throw my 2 cents in... LOL... I would say a Lancer 27PS if you can find one with a trailer (that's the caveat). Lots of room on deck and below (6'2" headroom) and Queen size aft berth for the missus.

comes along I will go back to taking a marina at least every other night. That will keep her happier when it comes to that type of stuff. Smaller boats are cheaper to do transient slips.

From my experience on the Chesapeake Bay, you pay a 25 foot minimum at most places. It is still cheaper by 5 feet for me. There are still a few places where it is $35 a night (30 for slip and $5 for power).
None the less, I will only do that when she is with me. The rest of the time I will anchor out. I can do with solar showers and other work arounds.

Having trailered boats extensively I do know that part of the equation in choosing a boat has to do with the ease or difficulty of setting up, and launching and retreiving. You are a sailor so I think you may forego the convenience of ease of trailering and cabin space afforded by the water ballasted vessels for a fixed keel, good sailer. Years ago we find such a boat in the Jim Taylor design Starwind 223. The boat has a fixed keel, centerboard combo. Fairly large V Berth and cabin space for a 22' boat. The Precision 23' has the same design with some interior changes. We have sailed heavy weather in it in the Long Island Sound and the Chesapeake Bay. Did a trip down the Potomac River from DC into the Bay and got into Tangier Island as small craft warnings were being posted. The boat trailers a little heavy around 5000# with outboard engine and supplies but has expanded our sailing venues from coastal Florida as only a trailerable can work around time constraints. Every marina has usually an akward slip that perhaps is to shallow or short and it has allowed us to find a convenient berth at the last minute at sold out marinas for certain events. Have taken many multi day trips and some even with 4 people on the boat.
Oh, just thought about this -- Jeaneau also made a 23, and when I was still living in Hampton Roads, there was one over at Leeward Marina in Newport News. I think he was trying to get $3K for it at the time. LOTS of volume inside that boat for the size.
I know your are looking at smaller boats and ran across this today when wasting some time on eBay.

Given some weight limitations for towing and keeping the rigging and de-rigging to a reasonable level of hassle, I would suggest you look at a late-70's Ericson 23-2.
Sitting headroom, but a complete interior (for a boat that size) and wonderful sailing performance. They were sold in fin keel and swing-keel versions.
An added advantage is that they had the inside workmanship and deck layout advantages of being the smallest 'yacht' from a builder of much larger offshore boats of the era.
(It's always better to buy the smaller boat from a high-end boat builder than the largest boat from a builder of cheap and under-engineered products. Aways.)

There are a lot of nice boats out there. We shall see as my boat just got listed, finally, last week. I am hoping that she sells okay. Her add is up on yachtworld.
