i've gone to dock parties and social mixers here but ... i'm the smallest boat on the dock and no one seems inclined to do even a a short sail out with me and back.
Try turning this around, instead of asking someone to go out with you, volunteer to go out with someone, especially is someone is short on crew on race night. You'll benefit from the sailing experience and you'll see how other boats are rigged, it will broaden your knowledge base.

Absolutely. You want to flatten the learning curve, go racing with someone. You'll learn more in one race keeping your eyes and ears open and talking about it afterwards than you will in a month or two going out on your own. I know people that have been sailing a long time (on their own) that aren't as knowledgeable as some inexperienced racers that have been crewing.

^^^ This.
After many years playing (hacking around at) golf, I spent $20 bucks for a lesson from a tour pro. Most bang for $20 I have ever gotten.
And best to do early, not late, when you'll pay to unlearn all the bad habits and practices you'll build up.

yeah - the lake i'm in has the yacht club - no one on the dock talks about the weekly regatta here i'm guessing thats all in the club. i'm considering another marina, or lake muskegon maybe even, to address the frustration. i even have clearance from my boss to leave work early to be at the docks by 5 so i can go out (2 hour drive to get there). I never wanted to go out without experience from someone other than mylittle lake sunfish sailing boats but when i got to the last weekend of july and bupkis... well. captain ron apparently. lol.

its a great source of frustration that i'm having trouble with the social aspect because for a it geek - i'm very extroverted.

as for the knowledge in that asa course - i think i'm probably past that with what i've done on nauticed. i'll be the first to admit it doesn't replace practical knowledge but shy of sinking myself out of ignorance i think i'm going to be stuck figuring that out alone.

When I got my first boat, other than a 3-day class, I had zero experience on a boat. My wife suggested I sail with a group of guys at our marina who went out every Wednesday night.

Of course, I took advantage of her suggestion to go sailing. I sailed with them for a few weeks, and eventually decided all I was learning was how not to spill a beer on a 30-degree heel.

Started taking my own boat out and chasing them. Never told the wife I was out solo every Wednesday, but learned a lot more than the social hour crew.

@tipsyravensailing dont best your self up. Your getting out on your boat. Your sailing it in a nice breeze. You bringing it back through the Harbor entrance, and like most Lake Michigan intrances it is narrow and 1/4 mile long. Then your maneuvering the boat back to the dock and tying up. By most criteria your a sailor. Good on you.
You clearly want to improve your skill set. Reading, doing, sailing with a friend, racing and lessons are the options. No reason you can not do some or all of them.

Continue the doing what ever else you do. Keep breaking down the experiences like you did today and your halfway there.
