Has anyone sailed a Mac 26 to the Hawaian Islands from the U.S. I'd be interested to know if it's ever been done or if anyone else is contiplating it. If not the Islands, has anyone sailed a 26 to any Pacific islands. Thanks in advance for any input.

Anything is Possible, but is it PRACTICAL ??

There was a young kid that sailed a 23' sloop around the world...a movie was made of it "THE DOVE" produced by GREGORY PECK...You may wanna look at the hardships doing a trip in too small of a boat...

Someone was talking about it

I don't recall who it was, but there was a sailor on this board talking about planning a HI cruise for next year. Most people thought he was crazy, but he sounded pretty set on the idea. From all I can tell so far, the Mac's a great boat for casual sailing. But if you're sailing into blue water you really need to be ready for ANYTHING, because it can happen. The Mac is just not strong enough, IMO, for what blue water can turn out. I love sailing mine here at home, but if I ever take-off toward Hawaii (which I would LOVE to do someday) I'll do it on a larger, tougher boat. BUT, if anyone does do it on a Mac I sure hope they write about it here! I'd love to hear how it goes!!

Crossings

I have heard that boats from 25 feet up make the trip all the time. Also I think man taking on nature is instilled in his psyche.

An Opinion...

Considering what "YESTER-YEAR" sailors used for crossing the Atlantic, Pacific, and exploring inland waterways...I'm of the opinion that the MAC26-X is "MUCH MORE BOAT" in Strength and Ability. Maybe the MAST and SAILs wont make it...but the BOAT is almost undestructable (unless, maybe, a big ole SHIP comes along and you get tangled in HIS PROPs.) That'd be a big "OPPS"...

Better ways

The best possible way to cross oceans in any sailboat is to pack it onto a ship and let them take it over for you at 35 knots. You fly over pick up your boat and sail it wherever you want, whenever you want with interesting things ot see and do. That way you avoid the vagaries of weather and sea, and avoid the weeks of nothing but constant work and worry on the boat. And it's inexpensive to ship, considering the cost of blue water insurance, requirements for provisioning and crew, wear and tear on boats and sails. Sailing a small boat on big water is exciting sometimes, boring and fatiguing at others. Downwind to HI can be a nice, if long, sail. The trip back is not so nice, that's why a lot of boats only make one way trips to the islands.

Have a taste first

Take your boat out past the Golden Gate to the Farralon Islands and back (60nm round trip). Then decide if you want to spend 29+ daze on the Pacific Ocean sailing/trying to stay alive, to Hawaii.

Have you taken your Mac to the Farallons?

Been curious to know if Macs have done that trip.

Pacific Islands

I have made two trips to Dutch Harbor, Ak. Does that count?

Big Island Sailing

On the other hand, it sure would be great to have my boat over on the Big Island when I vacation there. There are a few trailer sailors at the Honokohau Harbor near Kona. A couple of Macs, some corsairs, even a 222 sitting in storage. The ability to beach your boat would be great. John S

Dutch Harbor; Now there is a trip that has a lot of apeal. I'd be interested in hearing the particulars. Have you thought of posting an article about the trip? I think it would get quite a few hits. Thanks for your reply

Definetely blue water crossing

Gary in Edmonds: It's about 1900 miles rhumb line from Edmonds to Dutch Harbor, AK. So, I have to ask, did you put your boat on a ferry to go? Did you sail her in the water via inland passage and island hopping? Or did you just go in a straight line over that distance? I would guess provisions would be required for a three week trip, considering the best case of attaining hull speed the whole way would require about 13.5 days. Tell us how you did it, I think a lot of us are interested.
