I have to replace the macerator pump on my 2005 Catalina 310. The current one is a Jasco model 18590-0500 and when I turn it on, it runs slow, then slower, then stops in about 20 seconds. I tried turning the end screw and it turns (a bit stiffly I think), but when I turn it on I get the same result. Questions:

1) Is the Jasco 18590-2092 a compatible replacement? I can't find the old model anywhere.

2) Does anyone know if the pump is above the tank level so that I don't need to worry about doing a pump-out before replacing the pump and/or leakage when I disconnect the old pump? I would've tried harder to check, but it was 300 degrees on my boat this morning!

3) Is replacing the pump an easy job or a pain in the neck (e.g. should I just hire someone)?

Thanks!

It is below the tank, but as boat access generally goes, it's relatively easy to get to.

I don't know if this is an after-production installation but mine is mounted higher than the outbound waste opening. Although there probably would still be flow if there was waste in the tank.

I suggest you pump out first to limit the spillage and rinse the tank several times with fresh water while you're at the pump out facility. Maybe have some thru-hull plugs at the ready to cap the hoses off as soon as you remove them, and have some expendable towels to lay down.

I wouldn't pay someone. The wiring shouldn't be too difficult to figure out. It's pretty basic and if I can do it, probably everyone can!

Thanks guys...my installation is the original and looks just like your picture. I agree with your suggestion re the pump out. I interpret your comment to mean that given how high it's installed, there shouldn't be any leakage, but to be ready just in case.

Thanks again

Well gravity may have a different idea! If there's stuff in the tank, it may be forced out by gravity no matter where the pump is mounted. I would definitely get the pump out!

Cliff,

Was thinking about your system. This may be a dumb question but is your macerator thru-hull open? If its closed when you run it, that would cause your pump to have the symptoms you describe.

BTW, is there something wrong with a person who's sitting on his boat on a beautiful summer night with classic rock on the stereo, ice cold Rolling Rock and a great variety of exotic cheeses and thinking about another person's poo? LOL!

Hello CliffC

I had a similar problem with my macerator slowing and then stopping. If I tapped lightly on the case while it was running it would start again often at the full RPM's. You might give this a try to run the pump enough to empty the tank or flush FW through.

This went on for a while until it got progressively worse. I decided to change out last year. It was an easy enough chore. I emptied the tank the previous day sailing and then flushed through a couple of times with fresh at the dock. Then I filed with fresh again and had it sucked out. Doing this cleared the lines. I would recommend goggles and gloves, maybe even a paper filter mask until you got the old pump out. You don't want to catch some nasty bug!

There was little or no fluids left in the tank and nothing flowed from the lines when they were broken apart. Make sure your through hull is CLOSED

Cheers

Chris

The Jabscos have reported to be problematical. You might want to consider replacing with a Shurflo. Also consider using quick connect electrical connections. If the pump ever stops, swap the wires and run it backwards for a few seconds - usually clears it up.
