I'm a good swimmer. But in those conditions, and I grew up swimming in rough surf, I don't know if I could have reached that floatation. To speak of the condition ,we're told there were 6 ' seas. You can't really swim. You can ride up and down but basically you are trying to time coming up for breath. One or two waves away from the boat can be fatal. If his PFD had inflated he'd have a better chance but I suspect not that much. As SBO forums have concluded, staying on the boat is the way to survive. I've done a bear hug on a mast that you couldn't believe.

Imedi quickly deployed their MOM8a device which has a drogue, horseshoe and stand up pole with light.
6 footer with occasional 8 footer is tough to swim in especially the short duration. These aren't swells like on the west coast. Sad story

This is all very sad.
We have just upgraded our inflatable life jackets with Crewsaver 40 pro with harness attachment- They only inflate when you are in the water and are form fitting with quick burst zipper and have 40 lbs of Bouyancy, we got from Defender.
Again NOTHING will help you if you Do not wear it-we always wear ours before we even start the engine and it does not come off until we are tied up to the dock. We also have attachment points on the boat with tethers and also just got new knives we both carry-In case...
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all involved...
