Dear friends,

I bought a Mac Gregor 26S (I am the forth owner!) and this boat has the system of swinging keel completely destroyed. I mean to the system into the cabin, because the keel and the parts in the water are ok. Now I will kindly ask to an other owner how this system works for rise and low the keel: in practice what can I build in the cabin for this purpose? Maybe someone has a drawing or a photo of that?
Thank you very much in advance for your answers and have my best regards.

Sorry to hear of the problems. There is nothing that pulls or pushes the board down. It just sinks under its weight.

The line to pull up goes through a tube under the sink that is 'glassed' into the hull. A plastic tube is attached to it to get further above the water line. The line (on our '90 S) turns 90 degrees...

... on a block above the tube under the sink area. Then it goes to starboard and turns to the stern on a second block. It exits the sink platform and was tied off there to a cleat...

... that you can see above by the cushion.

We took that line further out....

....to the cockpit....

Good luck,

Dear Sumner,

before of all thank you very, very much for your imediately and exahaustive answer: with your photos and explanation I have all understyood! it was so simple and I past nights torturing the brain to find a solution!

After I gave a look to your wonderful site dedicate to your Mac Gregor 26S. Pardon: I thought to give a quick look, but me and my wife were fataly attracted to the enormous quantity and quality of mods you and your wife made on this boat! We too have made mods, but there are nothing in front of yours.

Our most important mods are an inboard diesel engine (Yanmar 9 Hp), a large bimini covering 3/4 of the boat, the electric winch for the anchor (with a magazine in the V-berth for the 40 meters of 6 mm. chain), a marine toilet passing throught the hull (with 50 liters of holding tank), the rolling mainsail and genoa systems, a new system for low and rise the mast (now is very heavy!), two tanks of fresh water (80 liters in total) and a medium size frigor for the hot summer. I'll send you some photos when I'll have, if you are interested.

Thank you again for your kindness and make my compliments to your wife for her wonderful work.

Sincerly,

Alessandro

First there is more on the CB here...

http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/macgregor2/outside-40.html

...and our CB configuration, how it pivots is one version. If you look at some recent posts here....

http://forums.macgregor.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=144686

.... you will see the other S version that was incorporated on the later S's.

Second those are some really, really impressive mods and I'm sure there would be many on the site that would like to see pictures of them. Please post them or send some to me and I would post them with your permission on my site and here.

The best to the both of you,

Sumner and Ruth

Alessandro, what year is your boat?
There are two different designs of the keel pivot system, depending on the year. The exterior mounting system changed to an internal system during the 1992 model year. This is what Sumner refers to in his other post.
Also, the cable system shown in Sumner's pictures changed location in the very late models around 1994 or 1995.

(Grazie a Google Translate.)

Excuse-me for the late answer

Dear VizWhiz,

excuse-me for this answer that comes more that one month later your kind reply, but my work brings me away from house and I haven't an Internet connection during this time.

My boat is of 1991 year and I don't think that it has the system that Somner has so well descripted. But I have seen and understood the photos and I'll reproduce this system that I think it is very useful.

I have only a doubt: I saw an iron line passing throught the hull. Doesn't that line "eats" the fiberglass during his running up and down, several and several times?

Thank you for your helping and excuse-me again for this late answering.

Sincerly,

Alessandro

No problem with the delay.

The line goes over the pulley and straight down and doesn't really rub on the fiberglass to the extent that it hurts anything. We haven't had a problem and I haven't heard of others having a problem.

Some people do replace that with a regular line though. I don't think they do it to avoid damage, but that it is convenient for them.

The best of luck,

Sum

Alessandro,
These are some diagrams, relating to the keel wire arrangement, that someone else posted . I am sorry I am not sure of the author and hope they don't mind me posting them in the spirit of assistance to you.

Just click on the photographs to enlarge them, then hold down your 'control' key whilst scolling with the mouse to enlarge further. They are a little difficult to read. (Hope I am not telling you the obvious:))
