Okay, I know I'm wearing you guys out and we discussed proper routing of the jib sheets outside the shrouds and over the life lines with a 150 Genoa a few weeks ago, now I have more questions. Yesterday afternoon, I went out in about 15 kt. winds. The "bay" the marina is in is fairly well protected from the wind, so I always raise and lower my sails before going out to make sure I don't have anything tangled. This also allowed me to reef down my main before heading out. I went out with the working jib and one reef point as mentioned. I originally ran the jib sheet outside the shrouds and under the lifelines this was causing the sheets to push up on the lifelines so I changed later to over the life lines, still outside the shrouds- just like I route for my Genoa. However, I think that leaves a pretty wide slot between the jib and main. I have seen a photo on the internet of a Mac 25 with the jib sheets run on top of the cabin through a fairlead on a track to a cam cleat, which would narrow up the slot quite a bit and I think would get the jib and main to work better together. I'm guessing that the wider the slot, the less the jib helps the main. At any rate, I didn't seem to be able to get the sails to work very efficiently and it seemed to me like the clew on the jib was pretty high when it was trimmed in. I also noticed that the reef points in the sail (when tied off to the boom) tend to make some small wrinkles that I think would disturb air-flow on the main, though it's lower on the sail. The stock working jib looks like an 80% jib to me, and I'm pretty sure it is the original, since the original main and Genoa are made by Horizon as is the jib. I'd like to know the routing everyone else uses on the sheets for their working jib and if anyone else has run a second set of jib fairleads and cam cleats on the cabin trunk. I'd also be curious to know if anyone else has purchased the jiffy reefing kit from BWY and how they like the sail shape using that for reefing. I know I'm just supposed to be having fun and learning with this boat, but even minor inefficienies bug the heck out of me. I want to make sure I'm getting the most out of the boat every time I sail.

Fairleads

There should be a fairlead on the cabin top just aft of the shrouds. One on each side, inside the lifelines. The working jib sheet should be inside the lifelines and pass through the fairlead and then to the cleat. I am sure these fairleads are factory. What year is your boat? I also have a set of adjustable cars/tracks on the cockpit coaming (and winches) for the genny. These were added by the previous owner. I run the sheets outside the lifelines and shrouds when I fly the genny. If its windy enough to need to reef, dont worry about wrinkles effecting wind flow around the reef points. I dont think it is enough to make a difference. I hope that makes sense. Keep having fun and asking questions. Thats what its all about!

I agree

My 1987 mac 25 is set up like Marks and I run my jib sheets the same way

Same here

Routed like Mark's and, I don't have any cam cleats for the sheets. There are a pair of horn cleats on the cabin but I added a couple of blocks to route the jib sheets to the genny fairleads so I can use the winches on cockpit coaming. I've seen some boats with what appear to be stock winches on the cabin, but all my boat has up there are the jib fairleads and a pair of cleats.
