Hey, I thought that I would pick your brain and see what you would recommend. I am trying to decide whether to keep my Mac 25 or sell it for a Cape Dory 22D. I am looking for a boat that will be extreemly safe and realiable plus easy to handle by myself. Any suggestions?

You probably couldn't find

two boats as widely separated on the design spectrum.

Cape dory ,hands down. Look at the catalina 22,25 or oday 22,23,25. There are anumber of comparable sailboats in the same range but the cape dory is by far one of the best for your money. look on the classified ads here on this site for a $comparison.

The Mac fulfills your criteria, but sometimes you have to switch too. I love mine, but will certainly trade for something fancier or sportier in a few years. The Mac 25 is not a powerboat: they run with less than 10 hp motors and feature a 625 pound keel. The Mac 25 preceded the water ballast models.

We Probably Can't Help You

We probably can't help you on this. The boats are too different, it really comes down to what you value most. The Mac will be easier to ramp launch, trailer and should have more room below and likely it will be faster. A Cape Dory will be hard to beat for quality and seaworthiness in the small package mentioned and has attractive traditional style. While MHO, some of the values above can be debated or disagreed with. What do you want? That is the hard decision. OC

This question is about the same as,

Should I buy a half ton pick-up truck or a little sports coupe? There is no way to make an answer because the question is like apples and grapefruit. Would you like strawberries or boiled turnips for desert? (I like both but not at the same time) ;D

Real Boat or an Unreasonable Facsimile!

Yes, we can help you with this. The Cape Dory is a real boat! The other thing (I'm just a tad Jaded here) is, well the other thing. I would choose a Balboa 24 over any MacProduct.

MacGregor 25

Hmmmm. His 1981 MacGregor 25 is NOT to be confused with the much later water-ballasted 26 models (sail or powersailor). The MacGregor 25 is inducted in the American Sailboat Hall of Fame and as a "toy", it seems to be in pretty good company (i.e. Sabre 28, Valiant 40, Catalina 22 and 30, among others). I have no advice on your choice because they really are designed to different requirements, but there seems to be some misunderstanding on the boat you already have.

you obviously aren't totally satisfied with the Mac...

however, the Cape Dory is going to be cramped in size, plus slow and stable in comparison. Perhaps a J Boat will be the correct answer for you.

Ross, That's an easily understood comparison, although sickening. Ray

Ray, boiled rutabagas with butter, salt and pepper

are a fine dish with roast leg of lamb. But they ain't stawberries and biscuits with heavy cream.

Cape Dory 22 D

I would take a Cape Dory 22 D over any Mac. The "D" stands for Diesel I'm assuming because they made two models, and one is for an outboard which is probably mounted in a well in the cockpit. I've never been too fond of that set-up for the outboard, but a diesel inboard sounds appealing to me. The boat is going to be a little small inside but the trade off is a good rugged coastal cruiser that could cross an ocean if you ever had to. Cape Dory Yachts were manufactured in my hometown of Taunton Massachusetts years ago, and were considered a quality boat with a hefty price tag. As far as Macs go; I always loved the Venture but they are getting scarce. I saw a Venture cutter rig on the river the other day, and it's still a handsome little sailboat in my opinion. I tried out a 2002 Mac 26 with centerboard and water ballast last year and was really impressed by the way it sailed. I'm not keen on wheel steering, but the small wheel was bearable to use and that new Honda 50 can really get you somewhere real fast in this sailboat. Although there is plenty of room down below, I was turned off by the excessive free board it had at the dock. You need a ladder to get on and off this boat. I'm assuming that this isn't the case with the Cape Dory 22 D which has lines similar to some of the Bristol Sloops. I'm very fond of small sailboats, so this would be my choice for all the obvious reasons. Joe

Liked My Mac 25

As has been said, it really depends on what you value. But dont sell the Mac short. It points well, has the flexability of the swing keel and I single handed sailed and launched mine all the time! It was a fast little boat that came with a 150% genoa. I could walk away from much larger boats with ease.
