Trying to find an oil leak today I discovered what I think may be the culprit.
It appears that the oil pan is chafing on the forward part if the fiberglass engine mount.
Has anyone else had a similar issue?
I have a 1988 ODay 35

Oil Pan Chaffing

I have a an 89' 35 and had the same chaffing. I noticed it when the paint was missing and found rust all across the front of the oil pan. My fix was to raise the engine while changing the motor mounts and cut the fiber glass on the forward cross beam back so it gave about a 1/4-1/2" of room infront of the oil pan. This still leaves a pretty thick cross beam. A multi-tool is very useful here. Ended up raising the engine up further and removed, inspected and repainted the oil Pan. Hope this helps.

Thanks Dave, that is what I was not hoping for.
Next question is what is the best and safest way to raise the engine?

Lifting Engine

Lifting the engine was not all that hard. 4x4 across the companion way restrained by the roof top winches. Used rope comealong. Lift slowly. After disconnecting stuff pay close attention to the dip stick holder housing going down to the oil pan. Picture shows basic setup that I got from another site.

Re: Lifting Engine

Thanks Dave I was thinking close to the same thing with the lift.
Was your pan leaking?

I recently changed the transmission on my 34. To raise the engine you should get a 4x4 beam and place over the companionway, then get a small hoist for 300 lbs or more.

A word of caution about this, disconnect everything including fuel lines, power supply etc. Remember to loosen the motor mounts and be very careful to re-align with a feeler gauge.

The engine has lift hooks, the engine will want to move forward depending on where you position the hoist on the beam.
Note: block the place with wood where you want the engine to rest on the oil pan.

Also, before you start this, make sure that the oil level is not slightly over full, as this can often cause oil to leak out the bell housing of the engine and can look like it is an oil pan leak.

No the pan was not leaking but it was rusting pretty bad so I wanted to inspect it and paint it to slow damage if I could which worked out. I did take the oil pan off to do a thorough job.

I could have but decided I didn't want load it. So I wrapped a longer line around steering support plywood that is under the rear of the cockpit sole. It turned out that the aft come along didn't take much load. It was more of a stabilizer.

If after this description it still is not clear I can restring the ropes and come along and post photos.
