After how many hours these engines begin to require rebuilding?

I mean at what hr mark an M25 engine considered tired and soon need to go under the knife so to say?

Thanks guys!

All depends on how well cared for.

I'm at 29 years and 2,900 hours. A friend replaced his at over 5,000. Those are #'s I know personally. I'm sure there are much higher ones out there.

And, sadly, many less.

Got any symptoms, or just worry-wart? :)

I am shopping for a Catalina 30 and wondered what hrs considered "old" for these small engines like M25s...

That's it basically...

General use is about 100 hours per year. Oddly enough, more is better, less could mean it was just used to tick over to get out of the harbor and not always warmed up and run hard.

Hey,

Last year I sold my O'day 35. It was a 1986 with a M25 and had about 5000 hours on it. It still ran fine. It didn't like to start when the outside temp was below 50. Then again, i don't like to sail when it's that cold anyway.

IMHO, few of these engines will ever wear out from too many hours. Diesels can go and go and go as long as they are maintained. Most engines seem to wear out from salt water exposure and the resulting rot. Once the oil pan or other cases get rotten it doesn't take long for the motor to be junk. It's important to keep the painted surfaces from rusting, the steel from getting salt water splashed on it, etc.

Regular oil changes, good fuel, coolant changes, etc. and these engines could outlive the owners!

Thanks guys..

I've found a very clean 1985 C30 with M25 engine (rebuild in 2011) at 324 hrs.
Put an offer yesterday and today it is accepted.
Now we're going for survey next Thursday.
Hope everything comes out ok..

Then the only issue is to sail her from Long Beach to Monterey Bay... Yikes!
