I have just recently upgraded to a 1984 Catalina 30' with the 3 cylinder Universal M-25 IB. Not withstanding, tides, wind etc. What is the avg fuel consumption?

Rules of thumb

My '87 C-30 with the M25XP uses about 1/2 - 3/4 of a gallon per hour depending on how hard I push the engine.

M25 Fuel consumption

I had a 1987 Catalina 30 with a M25XP diesel. The boat had a 18 gallon tank. At one point I had run the engine for 28 hours at cruising speed. My fuel gauge said I was on empty. I was in an area of limited fuel access so I was forced into running the tank down this low. When I finnaly got fuel, the tank took less than 10 gallons! I found out two things, my fuel gauge was off and my engine used very little fuel. I did not see the 1/2 to 3/4 gallion fuel consumption as reported by others.

Check it this way...

At the fuel dock fill it until the overflow disperses fuel (with a containment bottle of some kind). Get a reading on the hour meter. Go out and run the engine for at least 10 to 15 hours. Preferably at cruising speeds. Come back to fuel, repeat the same procedure. Check the Gallons per Hour used. This is a great way to judge your "personal" gallons per hour, and give you an idea of your cruising range. I kept a log of fuelings and tried to fuel at 3/4 tank 1/2 tank and 1/4 tank guage readings. Now when I look at the gauge and hour meter I can mentally see how much has been used. This worked for me and was easy to do. Keep a log of everything you do aboard. When you review it, many things can be learned.

GPH?

Hi Scott; I purchased a C30MKIII this spring with the 25xp eng. I know the tank was down somewhere around 3/4 when I launched this spring. After 40 hours, it come out to .45 gph assuming the tank was full in the spring and it was not. I am anticipating somewhere in the area of .3 to .4 gph. I had a 2 cyl Mk12 enging and it avg .23 gph over 4 years with good record keeping. Good luck Dave S/V Westwind
