Help..!!! I had a problem today with my 1988 Catalina 27 with a Universal M-18. I was running the motor at about 2900 RPM when it started to make a "loose change" ratteling sound. It appeared to be coming from the belt driven Fresh Water Pump on the motor. Not the raw water pump. I quickly reduced the RMP within seconds which in turn stalled the motor. I tried cranking the motor to start it, once stalled, but it would not turn over. The resistance against the fresh water pump was to great. The crank shaft and the alt. appears to turn ok but the fresh water pump does not. I believe I have a bad "seized" Fresh Water Pump ???? Any advise on this matter before I buy a new one and replace it????? Thank You....

Seized Fresh Water Pump.

You are correct. When the FW pump seizes it creates so much resistance to the belt that the motor chokes down. That same resistance then prevents a restart. I had the same problem on my Universal M 21 this summer. The pump is available from Torreson Marine or Kubota tractor dealers. I don't have Universal/Kubota cross reference numbers handy but will go to the boat in the next few days and can get that information. Use the pulley off the old pump. It takes about and hour to replace the pump
