Lubricating Those Thru-Hull Lever Valves Afloat

I am certain that a wealth of information can be found on lubricating thru-hull valves, but I thought I would try and get a quick answer from those who have already undergone the experience. Or, am I wrong and the plastic valves should be left alone aside from the periodic open and close exercise? I have a 1988 Catalina 30 with those plastic lever handled thru-hull valves throughout the boat. I do on occasion do the open and close exercise to keep them working well, but I have noted that some may stick and it takes a bit more muscle to turn the lever. Can these be lubricated while in the water? Will any specific lubricant penetrate deep into the lever/ball area to provide some better give on the lever? Thanks Bob Lake Lanier, Ga

Lube

On other forums, there has been mention of pouring a small quantity of vegetable oil down the pipe with the valve closed. Then open back and forth to distribute the lube....

winch grease

I have a Cat320 with the same stiff-handle problem. Many kind sailors offered advice last fall on the topic. I am just about to do mine, before the boat gets launched. Vegatable oil should work, as mentioned, but it doesn't last long. I use it regularly to keep the head pump handle running smoothly. I was just advised by a marine supplier to use winch grease for the or lithium grease. It is water-proof and should last longer.
