Lubricating the head

We live aboard and our jabsco manual pump head often is stiff and hard to pump/flush (we rebuilt in January). We currently use olive oil in the head when it becomes almost impossible to flush. Which seems to be every week or so. My husband has just purchased Head Lube from West Marine with the hope it will be more effective. However, when I read the ingredients list is says it is an potential skin irritant and petrolium by-product. My understanding was that you should not use petrolium products in the head, only vegitable oils etc. Is it safe to use this? Will it shorten the lifespan of the new re-built kit we installed in January? Is there something else we can do to make the head easier to flush?

Syn teflon grease

Go to the bike store and buy some synthetic teflon grease, that's all you need! Look in the archives under that keyword and you'll find more info. Fair winds, Tim _/)

Anything thin enough to pour down the toilet

is just gonna wash out of the pump in a few flushes. So you can either fight a never ending battle, pouring oil (mineral oil--baby oil is mineral oil, btw--is a better choice than olive or vegetable oil)down the toilet every couple of weeks...or you can spend 10 minutes once a year replacing the thick teflon grease that was in the pump when it left the factory and be done with it till next year. It's easy to do: remove the top of the pump--which depending on the age of your Jabsco either requires removing 6 screws or loosening on hex nut)...put a healthy squirt of teflon grease into the pump cylinder...pump a few times to spread it all over the inside of the pump...replace the top...you're done. Once a year during spring recommissioning should be all it takes to keep your toilet pumping smoothly.
