Peggy: Forgive me, I think you've answered this before, but what lubricant do you recommend I use when I build my Raritan PH I? This Old Boat says Vaseline. I'm thinking I need to spend a bit more.

Vaseline is a NO-NO!!

Or any other petroleum based product...petroleum degrades the valves and seals you're lubricating. And speaking of no no's...don't put any cleaning products containing bleach, alcohol or pine-oil solvents down the head--or any other plumbing--either...for the same reason. The only exception the "no bleach" rule is an annual or semi-annual recommissioning of the fresh water system according to the directions in the article "Fresh Water Maintenance" in the reference library in the Head Mistress forum ( and with spring on its way...eventually...now is a good time to download and print that one...'cuz the time to do it is during spring total boat recommissioning). The ONLY thing to use to lubricate a head is teflon grease...Raritan SuperLube is a good one...similar products are available from swimming pool supply stores. Get the thickest one you can find and really slather it in the pump.

? for Peggy

Contacted Raritan about SuperLube, but no reply. Where can I get some. I have a new H260 with a Jabsco head and wonder if a good idea to lube before first use. Also, will the lube effect your products in the holding tank. This is my first marine head and no clue about them. Thanks
