For the Hunter 310 and similair boats with Edson Wheel Sterring enclosed in a fiberglas pedestal, how do you reach the grease fitting at the base of the pedestal. It's too far down to reach, even with an extension on the grease gun.
I've always felt that the best boat mechanic is a small chimpanzee. He can hold ther fitting with his left foot, the nut with his right foot, the wrench with his left hand and the flashlight with his right hand.

If you remove the deck plate just aft of the pedestal, you can lay down and see and reach the base of it. Also Edson makes a lubricant for the needle bearing in the steering pedistal under the compass.

Your second paragraph, though seems to be problem solved. What are you going to name the chimp?

I have a 2000 H340 with an Edson pedestal and it should be similar to that on the 310. My pedestal has a top piece that comes off completely with four screws. There is also a center storage compartment that lifts out revealing the inards of the pedestal. Either way, I can reach and lube the zerk fitting at the base of the steering column using a smaller pistol type hand held grease gun.

I am on Forked River at the west end of the Southwinds Marina, onboard "Diamonds". You can borrow the small grease gun if you need it.
