I have a small LP Gas cylinder on my 1987 Model 322 Oday. It is manufactured by Worthington Cyclinder and is the 4.25 pound model. Begining in April of 2002, all cylinders must have an "Overfilling Prevention Device". I am having a trouble finding a new cylinder. The old cylinder can not be re-filled. Does anyone know where I can get a new one?

Bill; I had the same problem. Find an RV service center in your area. They can usually fit a new valve to your existing tank.

Or an LP gas distributor

I was able to get two fitted with the new valves for about $25.00 each.

Replace with new?

Bill, we ran into the same problem when we ran out of propane on the 4-pounder, but the PO had left a new 11-pounder for us. Problem was, we also needed to replace the fittings on the hose attachments. Suggest you get to an Ace Hardware store for the hose fitting replacement. And while you're there, see if they have one of those 11-pounders! They're used for camping, for BBQ's, etc. Cost is about $60-$70 depending on where you purchase it. Point is, you'll need BOTH the fitting on the tank (or a new tank) and a fitting on the hose! Safety tip - don't use white teflon tape on the hose fitting joints, as it corrodes the fitting. Get the yellow teflon tape. Good luck! Michael O'

Michael, please explain......

What is the scoop on white vs yellow teflon tape? I never knew there was yellow tape. What causes the corrosion? Rich

Just passing on second-hand info!

Rich, when I was purchasing the new 11-pound tank last weekend at Ace, I had this faint memory working that you don't use teflon tape on gas connections. (That memory from years and years ago when I was re-plumbing a house.) The local hardware guy confirmed that, saying it caused corrosion of the fittings. He did say that there is a yellow teflon tape that is for gas connections, but I didn't purchase it then. Didn't even look for it. I was just pleased that my very old brain was still dredging up these important facts! I do think I've got a slow leak in the connection to the hose, though, and will check that out this week. Which means that I'll be at Ace again, finding and purchasing the yellow tape! I'd let you know how it goes, but we're casting off Saturday morning for two weeks cruise down the coast to San Diego. Good luck! Michael O' "Frigate"

FYI

If anybody is interested, Worthington is still in business and is on the web. New tanks can be ordered if needed.

Had new valve installed on my old tank

complete with the new overfill protection. This cost me about 25 bucks - much better than the 120 for a new aluminum tank.

if you need the 4.25 tank call for special order

All of the supply houses have them. They can get you stuff that is not listed on their web sites or in their catalogs. I like Sailnet and Defender. Not sure if SailboatOwners.com does special orders or not.
