On a previous post I was asking about Garmin Radar, with the 740s and Maine mentioned a lowrance system in an earlier post, I looked at this and it looks to be a better all around system, the HDS-7 gen 2 Is the unit, any other input on this, with the 3 or 4 G radome?? Thanks Red

I can't speak to networking with other things but we have the HD-7 and like it. Hope to add radar and AIS in the next year or so.

I'v been using the Lowrance HDS-7 and the origional GB-24 radar on my Grady SF, also have a 4 Kw open array Furuno on it since I got the Lowrance the only time I spin the Furuno is when I'm looking for birds or thunder squalls.

I'm going to move the Lowrance over to the mac, and get the 10 or 12 inch Simrad and 4G for the Grady.

You cant beat the the Lowrance and Simerad for close in, you can see crab floats and small floating objects with in a couple of yards of the boat, and the power requirments are about 1/10 the Furuno.

Yes. We have a dual HDS-7 gen2 system with 3G radar, AIS, and sat weather. It's almost perfect.

I will be interested in seeing buoys, crab pots close boats in fog. Does this overlay the chartplotter?? 3g vs 4?? Good thing is I can get the plotter and add the radar...where is best spot for radar array...Red

Yes it overlays right over the chart, with a rate compass on the network to provide the correct overlay angle. 4G will be better for pots then 3G.

Location, not too high if you want close detail. Head high OK and no worries about emissions.

Garmin vs Lowrance

When I went to buy my GPS, I was told that if you buy a Garmin you can only use Garmin chips and software! I bought the Lowrance and bought software made by others and it has worked flawlessly. Buying the Lowrance means you can buy what you want not what Garmin has available.

I should have been more clear in my post. I was referring to the HDS-7 Gen 2 Touch version. A very, very impressive piece of gear and a real value IMHO.... I have also used both the Simrad and Lowrance versions of the broadband radar and it too is impressive. My most recent experience was with Simrad broadband on Gunni's boat on the Chess. It was impressive in picking up crab pots and fish weirs.....

I am sure Garmin will answer Lowrance/Simrad soon but for this season I think the HDS Gen 2 Touch series is tough to beat..
