Lowering gooseneck on mast

Well, I have received my sliding gooseneck from Dwyer. I slid it into the track just to see the fit. Not bad, but it seems sloppy compared to the fixed mount obviously. I am going to give this thing a shot this Summer. I will keep a close eye on wear and how I feel about the gooseneck in general and report back. I can always go back, but I feel that the lower center of effort will improve the boat's handling. I am away from my boat for two weeks, so I wont be retrofitting soon. It will probably be the first week in June before I can get it in the water anyway.

Waiting for your test drive reports, Jeff. Did you have to expand the opening in the mast, or coud you get the gooseneck in from the bottom? What are you using for a downhaul? Pictures are always welcome. ;-)

Goosneck

The goosneck fits right into the opening where you feed the sail in. You can't slide it in from the bottom, the Vang bail is in the way. I will have to remove the fixed gooseneck. When you raise the sail and cleat the halyard, it has a good length of tail. I fugured I would run the tail through the loop on the bottom of the gooseneck and cleat it off on the other side for a downhaul. I will take pictures when I get it rigged.

A few questions and comments

Jeff, I have totally blownup the idea of a track and sliding gooseneck! Price and the hassle of adding a track were factors as well as the interference with the Boomkicker and vang bale. I did experiment with adding a second mast mount for the gooseneck though after receiving the parts from Dwyer. I have played with differing heights and think that just slightly above or below the 2 opposite cleats on the mast appears to be as low as is practical. I will be leaving the old mount on the mast as well as having a lower mount. I also am affixing a second bale and possibly a second Boomkicker mount (I have not made one yet, but it is in the works). Based on your experimenting with your slider, what do you think of this height? The only negative that I have, and I guess that I will live with for the time being, is that the lowest sail slug will not be riding in the sail track. Shouldn't be an issue I THINK (I have been terribly wrong on many issues in the past and I hope that this is not another time). What do you think of this location from your experience? I have based this height simply on the fact that this setting is as low as I can go and still have the boom run over my back and tucked head as I bend down during a tack. What do you think? I have tested the heigth and such by affixing the mount to the mast with duct tape, but I have not yet drilled and riveted the new mount into place (No I have not actually sailed with it this way, just driveway sailing!!!). Actual testing may be quite some time away as I had my shoulder surgically repaired on Thursday. Possibly be lucky to sail this summer... We'll see. Anyway, what do you think? Godspeed, Rusty

HELLO!!!

Geo, Good to hear from you. Traveling to WI soon? When you do please drop us a line. We'll meet mid lake for a drink or two. Hopefully I'll be able to use the 170, but if not the Sea Doos always work!!! Messed up the shoulder in Novemeber and had put up with long enough. Phase one of the repair was last Thursday. If nothing comes out of that, 50/50, phase two later this summer. If it wouldn't have been for Newton discovering gravity and the 10 foot fall followed by a very rapid deceleration, I'd be fine Anyway, I hope your winter was outstanding. Beautiful here in Central Wisconsin. The cabin is ready to go. We'll be up there the weekend of the 20th. Look forward to seeing you again soon. Rusty

Glad to hear the shoulder

will not keep you off the water! We will be up there the week of June 24. I hope the water is warm and the wind is blowing. I MAY make a road trip for a day sail before that, but time is always tight and I suspect the water will be too cold for a little while yet. I look forward to a cold one with you.

Likewise

Look forward to seeing you. My wife's brother will be at the cabin June 23-25, but we will get up there though for a day trip. Are you spending the week or the weekend?

How low can you go

Rusty, I will probably not go below the two lower leats on the mast because I plan to use them as part of my downhaul. I am not sure how you will leave your permanent gooseneck mounted and still be able to use your sail. It sounds to me like a good way to punch a hole in your sail. I will remove mine and be able to have all of the slugs inside of the track. One of the slugs will probably be below the place on the track where you feed them in. Jeff
