At the end of the past season one of lower mast stays startd to fray (one or two strands broke at the bottom fitting). I bought a new one from Rudy and just wanted to check to see if there are any tricks to installation (e.g is there a captive nut on the inside of the mast, if not, how is the bolt held...?).

the new stay should go on just like the old one came off, but am wondering why you are replacing only one, would recomend replacing its brother also. new stays stretch and will need tightening or at least checking during next few sails. the stay should either slide into a groove in the mast or some kind of thru bolted rig. would take close look at outer rigging, because they should have more forces on them and may be needing replacement also...

clevis pins and cotters
the stays fasten with clevis and cotter pins. Spring for new pins all around. its worth the extra couple of bucks. I also recommend replacing all of the standing rigging at the same time. Its not too expensive and will give you peace of mind. I too bought new standing rigging for my 23 from Rudy and was delighted with the service and price. Also, if you were ever considering adding roller furling, the time to do so is when you are replacing the forestay.

T-Ball fittings
it sounded like AD has a modified mast with t-ball fittings since he asked of they had nuts on inside the mast...if so, then a twist and lift will remove them, also agree about new clevis and pins or rings.
