I have a mini vacation planned for the last week of August and plan to stay at the Liberty Landing Marina for a few days and sail around the Lower Hudson. Has anybody made this trip, and have any good suggestions. I know we cannot sail to the Statue of Liberty, but we will probably take a water taxi to Lower Manahatten and take the ferry. We also have planned to sail past the GW Bridge. I have sailed the East River and was curious if the current was as strong in the Hudson. We are also looking for ideas for some other day trips.

Done it

Libert Landing is a great location for sailing around lower Manhatten and a great jumping off spot for Sandy Hook. If you plan on going up to the GW, try to go up and down with the tides. Although not as strong as the East River, there is a pretty good current. Figure on around 2 hours +/- to get to the GW from LL. You can get pretty close to the statue-there's a buoy marking the perimeter where not to go. If you can, take a night sail-especially past Lady Liberty. It's quite beautiful! You can take a ferry from Liberty Landing to Manhatten, the statue and Ellis Island. Enjoy! We may be down there that weekend as well!

NY Harbor

The harbor can be pretty busy during the week. I like sailing north past the GW or down to Sandy Hook. Once you get past 42nd street the traffic dies down dramatically.. Just watch out for the ferries and barges - they are faster than you think and they don't move for sailboats!

NY HARBOR so much- Im workin on the boaters guide!

In the NY Harbor area there are many things to do and see by boat and by foot! First, Liberty Landing is nice and you can take the 5+dollar water taxi over. There is two bars and hangouts in the "morris canal" cool but not NYC. As an alternative:check out the rates at www.thenorthcove.com and ask to talk with Michael. The marina has huge yachts and so much sailing activity its a must to see even if to visit for lunch. Also take a look at this weeks NY magazine. WWW.NYMAG.COM and there are a list of beach bars to get food and drink right along the rivers. A few have boat tie up! You can sail your boat almost right up to the statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. You cannot land on either and there is now a security zone marked by white bouy's so watch for them. However, check the charts for the area between and behind these islands. We locals go there to anchor, swim, fish, windsurf. Its 6-15ft of water even at low tide and good anchor ground. The newest twist is Govenors Island. You can take walking tours there and I bet if you call in advanced you will be able to sail right up to their doc on the Buttermilk channel. No matter what, this is a small island that is great to circle and see historicl colonial buildings as well as forts. There is nothing on the East River, but Mayor Bloomberg may change that in 15 years. Sailing up the Hudson to the GW is great. Google "Palisades NJ" and you will see that there are waterfalls to see (not much rain this year) and great towns all the way up to NYACK-3hours up from the Battery. In NYC check out Battery Park City and walk along the new paths on the Hudson called the Hudson river park. Much has been done for the terrestrial part of this park, but a few of us are working hard to get the park to open for Marine use as well. If you have questions just ask me. Enjoy your sail to NY HARBOR!
