Joan and I will be on our DelMarVa circle on July 4 and expect to be in the lower part of the bay. Somewhere from Norfolk to Deltaville. She wants to see some good fireworks in this area. Anyone got any suggestions on where to be?JimS/V Java
... a bunch if you sit at the mouth of the York River. I enjoyed the fireworks at Virginia Beach, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Yorktown (one of the best), New Point Comfort and Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, all at the same time sitting in one spot. It's a hoot!
I don't anchor out much (I need to learn more), but I have seen folks anchoring out in front of the Portsmouth Naval hospital near mile maker "0" on the Elizabeth River (Across from the battleship Wisconson), and I have also seen people anchoring out in Hampton creek across from Blue Water yaching center in front of Hampton University.HTH!
..they always have a good list of the firewoks shows up and down the bay. They list the dates and times, not every one does it on July 4. check the website for info. good luck.
If you end up a day or two behind or ahead of schedule the display over the Patuxent River off of Solomons Island is not spectacular but not bad either. Good Luck!
I have sailed in the area of the lower bay a few times. I have an uncle that lives down there too. They really like the firework show at Waterside. It is just up the Elizabeth River (Not far from the mouth). The do the fireworks from two or more barges. It is quite a show!
I second the opinion on Solomons. The show isn't the best I've ever seen, but it's good. Better than the last time I was in Baltimore for the 4th, in fact. If the weather is good, there will be MANY boats in the river; get there early for a good place to anchor.
