Loweering/raising the mast while in the water

Five miles from our dock is a bridge with low clearance, then its clear sailing in to Pensacola Bay and the ICW, and the Gulf. Only with the mast tilted into its crutch is there sufficient bridge clearance. So going out and returning is a major chore while underway or even at anchor. QUESTION: has anyone modified the forestay to a " quick release stay adjuster" or "clibrated turnbuckle" or done anything else that might make the mast take down/put up process easier to perform while the boat is in open water? Tell me what you did and how you did it, or should I just forget the whole thing.

Risky biz

Quite apart from the need to stand too high on the boat, putting yourself at risk, the shrouds are a force to reckon with when tensioned. You'd have to loosen them and pull the pin on the forestay and so on. Makes me thirsty just agonizing over all this.

seems that with your boat..

you could rig something of a haul line to raise lower the mast. something like the gin pole/mainsheet system on the newer wb hunters (26, 24). Know a guy who used to do that on a Mac26x, he never waited for the drawbridge. Just lowered and went on under.

Caution

We started with an O'Day 20. It's mast was a bit shorter and lighter than yours. We had to step it on the water once to retrieve the main halyard after a pin failure dropped the main and left it jammed at the mast head. That was a bit of a surprise... Anyhow, it was a bear. Stepping the mast on a boat that is rolling a bit, while not being able to reach the masthead is dangerous. Be carefull.

MOve to the other side of the bridge

Arturo, move to the other side of the bridge, it sounds like it would be less work. Good luck!

No Way Will We Move !

will trailer launch at a site at the other side of the bridge before ever moving from this paradise location on a sheltered canal with a dock in the back yard. I can't believe there isn't a single 23.5 owner that hasn't dealt with the same problem. Hasn't anyone tried quick release lever, or a calibrated stay adjuster? If your out there lets hear from you!!!

easy

We use a quick connect pin and clevis instead of a direct turn buckle connection for the forestay connection, we find that once your tuned then all you have to do is pull a little extra rake to the mast when hoisted in the standing position and you can reconnect you quick connect very easy. When lowering or hoisting replace the main sheet with a sturdy a bungee strap to keep the boom from slapping until you get the mast down when you will move your main sheet foreword for your mast hoisting. do not attempt to use any thing else to raise or lower unless you have the same mechanical advantage, self-cleating cams, and the right length of line Hope this helps

Don't Give Up

Add some anti sieze compound to the turnbuckle it will be much easier to tighten I saw somwhere once a turnbukle with some sort of handle that would be easier as well West Marine has a contraption in their catalog for exactly what you want to do. Look up part # 246167 or 246175 Ask Julian at US Spars you may need to have him make you a new forstay with that on there. Here is the website http://www.usspars.com/ Good Luck

Quick release on the forestay

I've used the Johnson Quick Release on my H23 and my Presision 21. Both used 'hank on' fore sails and required a new (shortened) forestay. It was a simple modification for the P21 but the location of the forestay-bow connection on the H23 required me to make an extention plate so the connection could be made ABOVE and OUTSIDE the chain locker. The Johnson Quick Release made the final step on raising the mast easy. If your boat doesn't have a roller furling, I would highly recommend adding one. My H23.5 has a roller fuler and I haven't looked to see if it would fit with the furler. Hope this helps, Mike
