LOW OIL PRESSURE AND HIGH WATER TEMPERATURE ALARM

I have an O'Day 272LE with the Westerbeke 10 Two diesel inboard engine. When I turn on the ignition key the low oil pressure and high water temperature alarm activates as it should. Once I start the engine and the oil and water temperature gauges come up to normal operating specs, the alarm continues. I have replaced the alarm and the same thing still happens. I traced the two wires back to the engine which connect to the wiring harness located next to the pre-heat solenoid.

Anyone have experienced this and have some answers?

Very likely that the oil and water temperature gauges were a PO addition. I mention this as a source of possible modifications from original manufacturer install and unknown quality and reliability of components and work. Upon start up the engine is cold and the high temperature water alarm should not activate. Check the wiring and sensor for the oil pressure sender. These sensors are basically ON/OFF switches that close a circuit the same as a short circuit would. The sensors can be tested and if found to be the source of continuity when they should be OFF then replace. If they are OFF and the alarm is going on then you have a short circuit in the wiring or a failure in one of the gauges. What are the warning lamps doing? Ran into a problem years ago in an older vessel. The wiring harness from engine to panel after many years of hull flexing causing it to rub around the sharp fiberglass corners caused the insulation to chaff and it cut in to some of the wires causing a short giving a false overheating warning lamp. A visual inspection of harness showed the location of the short and it was an easy fix. Good luck.
