toledo was a huge coal loading port back then. ore came down from up north and coal went north through out the great lakes. WV and southern ohio. very high sulpher

and yes it was cheaper to ship it to detroit, but also we could dump 10,000 tons on your dock right next to your power house in 4 hrs. trains take allot of infrastructure to dump at your plant. it's all gone now. huge pollution issues or so some claim. that's a joke. it's good that the old ways are gone.
