I am getting ready to make an offer for a CAT 30. However I still have several questions. 1. I have been unable to get a price for a Bimini and dodger. Does anyone have a good estimate or the diminsions needed to get an estimate? 2. What prop will give the most power from the univeral 11hp? 3. What is the best type and placement for the depth sounder tranducer? 4. What is the average life of a sail ?

CATALINA 30

From your post, I think you need to do a lot of research about sailboats before you buy one that large. They are a lot of work, A lot of fun and very expensive. Good luck in your endeavor.

q's

I have a 1981 Catalina 30- 1)Dodger with canvas window covers and frame-about $2000 in San Francisco 2)We have a 3 blade prop-good speed going forward-lots of prop walk in reverse at slow speeds. 3)sail life depends on use and care. Are you racing? A good sail (fully battened) for recreational use should last 5-10 years. We pull our main off every winter-take it to North Sails and have in refurbished-repair stitching etc.-It will last a very long time.

Questions

Catalina recommends that these transducers be placed under the v-berth on port and starboard sides. 11 hp isn't much and you should consider the weather (wind/tides) you will be sailing in.

transducers

My old 27 had the transducer mounted under the v berth, but my 30 has it mounted at the lowest point in the hull by the engine. Both worked, but I would sometimes get strange readings from the one mounted under the v berth. Sails if you take care of them will easily last 10 years or more. Always keep the sail covers on when not sailing. Flake the main nicely, furl or flake the jib and you will be fine. I also tend to rinse mine with fresh water at least once a year or after any sail in major seas. Salt water is not really harmfull to dacron (in fact neither is acetone, soap, paint thinner, etc according to a local sail maker), but dried salt crystals can be abrassive to anything.
