I purchased my 87 272LE last November in a snow storm. Lots of fun trailering for 150 miles!! I had a detailed survey done and now have lots of minor maint to do on her. Mostly repairing rain water leaks. Ive noticed many articles on this and suspect it to be a common problem. I have leaks about everywhere, stbd chainplate, stanchions, hatches ... Any suggestions on a good sealant to try? I also have to purchase a new cutlass bearing and replace the pulleys in the mast base. Where should I get stuff like this? Thanks for the help Jeff

leaks

Hi Jeff- Congratulations on the 272! I bought mine new in '86 and love it (just a 272, not LE). In the 15 years I've had it, Ive had a few leaks as well. In the first few years I had to rebed the forward hatch. I've had to do the chainplates every few years. Two or three years ago I removed the bow pulpit and all the lifeline stanchion bases and redid those. I don't have a particular favorite when it comes to sealant, but don't go cheap. Use what's generally recommended for the application. What's important though is that the piece you're doing is removed, all the old stuff cleaned out, the mating surfaces cleaned well (like with a solvent) and adequate caulk is used to rebed. When the piece is remouted, don't tighten it so much as to squeeze all the sealant out. Rather, snug it up so as to leave a turn or so on the fasteners. Then, after leaving it to set up for a couple days, go back and do the final tightening. Don't just run a bead around the piece; it's messy and doesn't work long term. As far as the parts you need, there's a guy out here in Mass. that has alot of these things. His name is Rudy Nickerson, but I don't have his phone # handy. You should be able to get it off the one of the O'Day sights Good luck

trailering your 272

I am interested in buying a 272 le from an owner who has the boat at the opposite end of the Chesapeake from where I am located. This is about 250 miles.Did your boat have a trailerwhen you bought it? How bad was trailering.I'd like to get to know the boat before taking on a trip that long.

Trailering the 272

Jerry, I'm a new 272 owner who recently acquired mine in the Des Moines,IA area. I'm unaware of any larger O'Days in my end of the world, so distance was a necessary hurdle. It pulled the 1250+ miles wonderfully with a heavy duty F250 4x4, with a 460 engine. No problems whatsoever, except for the 80 mph occasional cross winds we encountered in SD. I wouldn't recommend pulling with anything less than a 3/4 ton truck. We did traverse about as severe of a terrain situation as one would care to challenge, but all went exceptionally well. I am neophyte to the 272 and am still primping mine and hope to launch as soon as Mr. Ed Laviano of Bellpat Marine in NY does a quick turn around with my retrofitted hinged mast step. Best of luck, and don't let 250 miles stand between you and an excellent boat. Cheers, Jay Gilmartin
