Lots of Boats Out In Your Area?

This past weekend, both Saturday and Sunday, there were easily a lot more sailboats out on San Francisco Bay than I had ever noticed. A fine sight. Granted we're right in the middle of summer, the conditions were great, and a few races were in progress. Still, looked to be a lot of boats nonetheless.

Do more people seem to be out in your area? Maybe more than in years past? If so, opine some reasons?

Yes, it was because

we had six of our boats up at the Corinthian YC over the weekend, really crowded out there, eh? It sure was nice, and the Ch 16 chatter was, yet again, really amusing.

Good news: still lotsa water to use for all of us.

Going Past the White Building

My wife and I sailed right past the big white Corinthian building at about 2:30.

Winds for the day were +/- 25Kts all the way from the Crissy Field side of the slot to just east of Angel Island. Then we encountered a really dense concentration of 0 (zero) Kts behind Angel Island up to the entrance to Racoon Straight. After floating for 30 minutes while we had lunch, we were still becalmed. So we opted to motor several hundred yards of the dead zone to catch the nice moderate breeze blowing through the straight. A slight ebb current helped get us back to Sausalito without much fuss -- except for the need to keep an eye out for all the boats going in every which direction! Finally +/- 25 kts again back in the slot between Angel Island and the GG Bridge before making the run back into Sausalito. No complaints about the day at all.

Seems about average around here. I watched a guy in a motor boat towing a tube with 3 kids on it decide he'd tow them in channel toward their home I guess. He apparantly wasn't paying enough attention to the cross wind or the tubers and put them right into a channel marker, 2 of the kids were ejected but they didn't themselves impact the piling and were swimming back to the tube immediately.

They got lucky, I couldn't believe what I was about to see and their reaction afterwards was not very reassuring either. If it would have been low tide I could see the need perhaps for that carolina skiff to stay in that particular channel, but it was high tide and they don't draw anything. I won't even mention the taking the tube through the markers or not paying attention when their kids were on the tube behing them.
