While shutting my 1989 H30G down for the winter the topping lift stopper knot was pulled right through the clutch and up the mast and then down the mast. I have removed it completely and will need to reeve it in the spring. I know this is going to be challenging but does anyone have any tricks? I'm thinking a small lead weight and a thin messenger line dropped down at the mast head and then fished out of the exit plate but I'm concerned about getting it done without wrapping the other halyards. Thanks in advance. Tim

Christmas gift opportunity!

Hi Tim - Argh... I hate it when I do things like that! You've got the right idea on how to fish the topping lift line back through the mast - just make sure to bring your patience and you'll be fine. HOWEVER, you might tell the family what agony you're in, how you'll probaby have to sell the boat, go on and on about it. UNLESS, if you could just somehow get a Garghauer rigid boom vang, you know, the stuff dreams are made of, you'd be such a happier man - much easier to live with. And Christmas is sooooo close! Give them a part number and tell them that's really all you want for Christmas. Happy holidays, Trevor

Dutchman

I had a boom kicker on my Columbia 26 MKII that when used with a boom vang resulted in something similar to a rigid vang. I enjoyed the results. I also had lazy jacks to control the main. I usually have a boat load of lubbers and a means to control the mains'l is manditory in my book. I'm keeping the topping lift for the Dutchman system which is leaps and bounds slicker than any lazy jack set up I've seen. Nice plug though. Tim

Again......

..............I wish to retain the Dutchman system which will require a topping lift but thanks. Tim

Halyard lead

Is your mast up or down? If it is down, you could more easily study the sheaves for entry. Possibly raise the main halyard, connect a lead line and pull the lead line to the top of the mast. When the lead line is at the top of the mast, you might be able to make contact with the lead line a pull it out of its respective sheave...Just a thought.

Why not use a halyard?

With the mast down, pull the sail end of a halyard to a little beyond boom level (this should leave plenty out of the mast at both ends). At the mast head, fish a small loop of halyard thru the topping lift sheave. Attached the bitter end of the topping lift to the halyard at this point. Keeping light tension on topping lift and halyard, pull the bitter end of the halyard as if raising sail and when the topping lift reaches the area of mast exit fish it out and undo from halyard. Oh, tie a large stopper knot in the halyard :)

Mast is up and.............

............... I was wondering how long it would take for someone to throw something out there about a stopper knot. You can bet all my lines up the mast will have a stopper the size of a small childs head from now on. Tim

Steel & Magnet...

instead of a lead fishing weight, use a bit of bicycle chain or something else made of iron, then use a strong magnet at the exit. Or sewing a messenger to an existing halyard as previously mentioned- assuming you're talking about the boom lift- is a Great idea! I'll have to remember that one! Bill

Time for the bossum chair.

Been there done that; used a fishing line an a small lead weight like you intend. It was pretty easy to fish out the bottom. Realized we had lost the line when we lowered the main and the boom rested on the arch.
