While motor sailing south from Puerto Vallarta to Bahia Chamela, Mexico, and about 5 nm out of Chamela, we apparently hit an underwater obstruction and lost our rudder. We were in 25-35 knots of wind and 8-10 foot seas, about 2 nm off shore. Fortunately a big power boat took us in tow and got us safely to anchor in Chamela. There are no facilities here for boat work, but I think we can put in a replacemet rudder while in the water. Problem is, finding another rudder! Do any of you know where I might find one? I will contact Hunter directly to see if they have one or can either make one for me or can supply shop drawings so I can have one made. By the way, my boat is the 1982 model H37Cutter. Thanks for any suggestions. -Chuck-

Right Here, Maybe, Chuck...

Chuck, I see this site lists Foss Foam rudders for sale, and a 37 is a listed model. I suggest you e-mail them and knowing them, they will bust their tails to help you out in this predicament. Good luck and keep us informed. Rick D. PS: a couple of years ago, about 100 nm's off Cabo, we sailed past the reminants of a floating dock at about 8 knots. Gives me the willies whenever I think of it.

Rudder Replacement

I couple of years ago I bent the rudder on my H37C, ordered a replacement from Foss and I came in as ordered in about 2to 3 weeks. All I had to do was drill and tap a couple ot holes(quadrant, etc). I ordered it with a heavier guage of tubing than was on the original, no problem.

Al Walker at Foss will take yor money

and make one for you. He'll even give you a discount on another rudder when the new one fails in a few years. I recommend you talk to him about make the internal metal frame more robust before you write the check

I would try

Ida Sailor, at 1-800-400-2204, or see link below. I'm not sure if I've ever heard a good story about a Foss Foam rudder (and I have one on my boat....).

Ha... I have a 1980 37C and I called, also. My rudder is bent 90 degrees to Port and the transom is going to take a LOT of fiberglass work to repair. It's been an education!!!! :> thanks for the reference.... --jerry
