If you had a fixed blade prop it should have had a cotter pin to lock the attaching nut in place. The cotter pin prevents the nut from backing off the shaft. The only possible way that nut can come off is if the pin was never installed.
But I'm asking myself, why would you need to remove the prop to install a shaft zinc. Most shaft zincs come as a two part unit that bolt together over the shaft. I have replaced my zinc while the boat was still in the water.

Have you reported this issue with the yard that did the job? I would simply ask them to repair your boat at their expense.

Yes, I would definitely speak with the yard that did the work. You should have received some paperwork when you dropped the boat off. There may be a warranty covering work/workmanship for a period of time after the work has been completed.

I had a similar issue when I recently had the bottom of my boat painted. The following weekend I dove on the boat to take a look and discovered several spots where the paint had been pulled off when they put it in the sling still wet. I called them up and explained what happened and they offered to fix it at their expense. They hauled it and virtually repainted the entire boat.

It might be worth looking into.

These are the two-part zincs made for prop shafts. They are made to be bolted together over the shaft so the prop does not need to be removed. Definitely talk to the yard that did the work and explain what happened. Don't feel bad about not knowing or not watching... that's their job and they should know better.

Streamlined Zinc Shaft Anodes

BTW welcome, and otherwise I know you'll enjoy the boat.

Before obtaining a replacement propeller make sure you have the prop bored to the correct taper and shaft diameter.
American tapers are 1 in 16 but much of the rest of the world uses 1 in 12.
Also the shaft diameter will be in imperial (inch) measure as opposed to a metric (mm) diameter.

Another reason that the prop should have nothing to do with replacing a zinc. The zinc should be on the other side of the strut. We attach the zinc within an inch or two forward of the strut. This might keep you from loosing your shaft should it ever come loose at the engine flange. Two thoughts come to mind. Maybe there was a bad one and they had to remove the prop to get it off. Or could they just have been padding the bill? But I have never seen a shaft zinc that was not split.
