Just received a call from the yacht club ..2 boats were struck by a ship last night in dense fog. My mooring ball is now on the beach and the mooring chain on the bottom.. My boat was struck last year just after having the sides awlgriped.. So this year I had the mooring moved closer to the club.. It was there for less then a week and now it's on the beach.... The only good thing was that my boat was not on the mooring last night but in Scituate harbor.. I sleep on my boat often and as my wife said she will not feel comfortable sleeping on it for fear of being hit at night.. Should the club pick up the cost to replace the mooring ball and associated diving costs to recover the chain..??

Wouldn't it be the responsibility of the ship's owners?

Is the ship's owners going to cover the damage to the two boats? Or was it the nautical equivalent of a hit and run? Unless I'm missing something I can't see why the club should cover the costs. You may strain your relationship with the club also if you try to have them cover it. It may not hurt to contact your insurance company and let them know what happened. You were very fortunate that your boat wasn't there at the time of the collision. Manny

What a series of bad luck

you're personal boat insurance? You may be able to recover the chain with a large magnet or a grapnel hook. Use your GPS to relocate the spot.

That stinks..

But I can't see, without further clarification, why it would be the Yacht Clubs responsibility? Perhaps, it's the Yacht clubs mooring, that you rent from them, and in that case they should be going after the ship that took it out and working to find you a temporary one. If you actually own the mooring I think you are probably going to have to foot the bill and then go after the other guys insurance for recovery of damages..?? That's one of those odd ones like getting struck by lightning! Your wife should not worry and if she does simply turn on the anchor light while on the boat..

I did think so either..

Yes I do own the mooring so I will have to pay for either a new setup."1000.00+" Which is what the mooring installer recommended today. He felt that the mooring was more then likely pulled into the deeper channel and would be a waste of time diving for it.. But the club mooring person feels that it is still there and I should have someone dive for it.. He stated since it was just moved to this new location the steel attaching pole should be easy to find.??. I can't even think of using my insurance for something like this since it would be my third claim in 5 years.. So I have set up a diver for next week and will work with him using the club work boat to hopefully find the mooring and chain. In the mean time it looks like I can use another mooring in Scituate for next week. If that's a problem then I will have to pay 35.00 a day to rent a mooring. That's the way it goes in the boat world I guess.. I just hope my boat doesn't get hit again.. I far as the anchor light goes it wouldn't have help that night the fog was that bad. Also my mooring ball is in 75 pieces on the beach so this was a direct hit and pulled the ball it a LARGE prop.. Thanks -Carl

sounds like the yc ought to consider...

...installing a radar-reflecting buoy at the outside of the mooring field.
