Lost my electronics!

Everyone says not to depend on them too much because they will fail when you need them most, well they did. Coming home from Nantucket we lost most of our instruments (wind speed and direction, VHF (transmission only), engine tach, autopilot and GPS. Thank god the back up GPS and hand held VHF and the radar worked. We get power to them however the auto pilot won't engage, GPS and tach are intermittent. We got home OK but also lost our RIB AB dinghy, no luck with the Coast Guard. Any ideas about where to begin with the electronics? Russell S/V Allie Kat

Do yourself a favor

Sounds to me like you need to find a good marine electrician in your area. Do yourself a favor and get a pro to look at this.

Etiology?

You didn't indicate the circumstances that caused (or led up to) your loss of electronics. Possible lightning? Any other concurrent electrical failures (lights, bilge pump)?

No warning.

One day they worked, the next day they didn't. No signs of lightning, no other problems with bulbs or fuses. Russell

Electronics gone

With some instruments out and others working intermittently I would venture a guess that you have a loose/coroded (sp?) connection or ground wire. You should be able to check for consistent voltages starting at the power source, thru the panel to the instruments. This can be done with an inexpensive multi-meter. Craig S/V wind Toy 1977 H25

What is your Coast Guard reference?

What did you have "no luck" with?

Gettig our dinghy back.

In addition to loosing our electronics, we lost our dinghy on the way back. Contacted the coast gaurd to report it lost, they had a report of it floating in Vinyard Sound, but were unable to locate it. We thought about going back, however it would have been getting dark, and with the 3 knot current we didn't know where to begin. Anyone seen an AB RIB in Vinyard sound? Russell
